about

Dyad’s Carpe Sonum debut should well standout in our illustrious catalog simply by dint of its unpredictable sound design. Need one almost deem it prog? Well, the keyboard flourishes on the opener “Out West” would’ve made the late Keith Emerson sit up and take notice, and the silvery six-strings demonstrably struck across “Dust” and “Grass Hats” imagine some kind of hybrid meeting between BJ Cole, Harold Budd, and bluegrass from another world. “Mall Simulation” returns things to a more Tangerine Dream-adjacent realm, albeit with a glut of pedal steel that beckons to worlds first glimpsed by Pink Floyd in their heyday. IDM’er Faex Optim has a go at remixing the earlier piece “Dan”, turning it into a mid-tempo, dayglo rush of glitterball disco that’s all the more perky in its energetic persistence, a wonderful and wooly thing indeed. Those elegiac guitars make a wistful return on “Raven”, pingponging across a southwest landscape where tumbleweeds scramble about parched digital mesas, recalling no less than A Small, Good Thing’s similarly buoyant, electronic twangs. Dyad will surely twirl your lobes a thing or two, a different kind of tension to be sure.
